Kadir Van Lohuizen Photographer and Video Journalist

Photographer In Residence

In March and April 2022, EatThis. welcomed Kadir van Lohuizen as its first Photographer in Residence. Known internationally as a photojournalist and visual storyteller, Kadir brought his lens to the horticultural sector at a crucial moment just after the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than focusing solely on technology or production, he explored the real challenges faced by horticulture and placed them within a global context — from the people working in greenhouses to the complex systems that shape our food supply.

During his residency, Kadir immersed himself in the world of Dutch horticulture, speaking with growers, plucking tomatoes himself, and observing daily operations firsthand. This deep engagement allowed him to portray not just infrastructure but the human dimension behind greenhouse production, showing both resilience and vulnerability within the sector.

The work he produced during and after his residency has reached audiences far beyond horticulture. It has been developed into a VPRO Tegenlicht television series, published in Dutch newspaper Trouw and featured in The Washington Post — all contributing to broader public understanding of food systems and agriculture.

In addition, Kadir’s ongoing project Food for Thought — a comprehensive visual investigation into global food systems that spans photography, film, and data — has been exhibited widely, including in large museum shows such as the exhibition at the Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. These works continue to challenge viewers to consider where their food comes from and how food production connects local and global realities.
